DEKRA's Plymouth Lab Gains Approval for Ford's FMC 1278 EMC Testing

Published 2 min readnews

DEKRA has announced that its Automotive Test Center of Excellence in Plymouth, Michigan, is now approved to conduct testing under Ford Motor Company's FMC 1278 specification. The approval broadens DEKRA's standing as a recognized automotive EMC testing provider, adding emissions, immunity, transient, and electrostatic discharge testing to its capabilities for validating automotive electronic components and systems.

The approval builds on DEKRA's ongoing investment in the Plymouth facility, which houses two semi-anechoic chambers, a reverberation chamber, and other advanced testing equipment. In addition to EMC work, the center handles environmental, dynamometer durability, connectivity, EV charging, cybersecurity, and functional safety testing, positioning it to support the validation of connected, electrified, and software-defined vehicles. The lab holds ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation, giving manufacturers a vetted resource as OEMs face mounting pressure to validate increasingly complex electronics on tight development schedules.

John Tesoro, President of DEKRA Americas, called the approval an important milestone for the company and its customers, noting that it reflects DEKRA's investment in EMC testing capability and strengthens its ability to support OEMs and suppliers building next-generation vehicles.

Specifically, DEKRA's FMC 1278 capabilities now cover radiated and conducted emissions and immunity, transient disturbances, magnetic field immunity, load dump, electrostatic discharge, and voltage fluctuation testing across a broad frequency range suited to modern vehicle architectures.

Andres Moreno, Senior Vice President of Digital Product Solutions at DEKRA North America, credited the achievement to the engineering and quality teams behind it, saying the expanded portfolio of OEM-recognized testing services helps customers move through product validation more efficiently.

The approval adds to DEKRA's broader automotive testing portfolio and underscores the company's continued investment in the facilities and expertise needed to support manufacturers as vehicle technology grows more complex.
