Frequency, wavelength, and the far-field boundary

Chamber setup, antenna choice, and “are we even in the far field?” questions all start from frequency and wavelength. This converter links frequency, wavelength, period, angular frequency, and a simple far-field boundary estimate.

Use it when you are placing a probe, checking whether a 1 m cable is electrically long, or deciding if an E-to-H conversion is allowed. The far-field rule of thumb is not a substitute for the standard’s measurement distance.

Quick answers about using this calculator

What is the far-field distance for a small antenna?
A common estimate is 2D²/λ for aperture antennas, or several wavelengths for electrically small sources. This tool gives a reference number; the test standard still names the official distance.
Why does wavelength matter for EMC cables?
When a cable is a significant fraction of a wavelength, it radiates and picks up fields differently than a lumped wire. That is why a harness that was quiet at 30 MHz becomes the antenna at 300 MHz.
