About
Element's Boxborough laboratory is a 65,000 square foot testing campus spread across six buildings on Massachusetts Avenue in Boxborough, west of Boston, and describes itself as New England's premier EMI/EMC, environmental and dynamics facility. Its chamber estate is substantial: a 10 metre anechoic chamber, a separate 3 metre FCC-listed chamber, a copper-lined reverberation chamber and six shielded chambers in total, with radiated immunity generated from 10 kHz to 40 GHz at up to 200 V/m and electrostatic discharge testing to 30 kV. Indirect lightning effects simulation and RTCA DO-160 Category G qualification cover the aerospace caseload. The distinguishing credential for the telecoms sector is NEBS certification - the Network Equipment-Building System requirements, tested to the Telcordia GR-1089-CORE and GR-63-CORE criteria that North American carriers impose on central office equipment, and a capability only one other laboratory in this directory holds. Accreditation is held from A2LA for both EMI and mechanical testing, the chambers are FCC listed, and Element as a group is a Notified Body for the European EMC Directive, an Approved Body for the UK EMC regulations and a Conformity Assessment Body for the FCC. The environmental and dynamics estate around the EMC chambers is unusually large - thirty-two temperature chambers including four walk-in temperature and humidity units, electrodynamic shaker systems, seismic simulation, acceleration services, shock and drop testing, hydraulic test capability, HALT and HASS accelerated life testing and high-level acoustic noise testing - so a full qualification programme can run on one campus. Specialisations are NEBS and telecom central office equipment, defence, aerospace and space hardware, DO-160 qualification, and combined EMC with seismic, acoustic and accelerated life testing.
