About
Element's Huntsville campus is a massive 238,196-square-foot testing facility situated on 115.6 acres in Huntsville, Alabama — "Rocket City." The lab specializes in large-scale and custom testing for the defense, nuclear, commercial, telecommunications, transportation, space, and aerospace sectors, and is home to Element's Nuclear Center of Excellence. The facility has been in operation since 1961 and has qualified more equipment than any other laboratory in the industry. EMI/EMC testing is among the lab's core capabilities, performed to EPRI, Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), FCC, and Department of Defense standards. The Huntsville facility offers radiated susceptibility testing up to approximately 200 V/m across a frequency range of 10 kHz to 40 GHz, along with a full complement of emissions and susceptibility test methods. This EMC capability is particularly significant in the nuclear sector, where electromagnetic compatibility of safety-related equipment must be demonstrated as part of equipment qualification under 10CFR50.49 and IEEE Standards 323 and 344. The lab holds IEEE ICAP (Conformity Assessment Program) certification, streamlining qualification and approval processes for nuclear equipment manufacturers worldwide. Beyond EMC, the Huntsville campus offers an extraordinary range of testing services. Dynamics capabilities include vibration (electrodynamic and electrohydraulic, with payloads up to 75,000 pounds), classical and synthesized shock, MIL-S-901D lightweight shipboard high-impact shock, pyroshock (ordnance to 50 kg), drop testing up to 3,000g, HALT/HASS, parallel pendulum shock up to 100g, acceleration, and structural load testing. Environmental simulation is supported by over 50 chambers and systems. The facility also houses high-intensity acoustic noise and progressive wave acoustic noise testing, high-flow steam and water capabilities for valve testing, and advanced calibration and metrology services including the operation of a Type 1 Metrology Laboratory for NASA.
