About

Element's Tempe laboratory is a multi-discipline testing facility located in Tempe, Arizona, serving as the state's leading product qualification lab for climatic simulation, dynamics, and EMI/EMC testing. Part of Element's U.S. Space & Defense network, the facility supports both commercial and military sectors from full qualification programs through early-stage design verification and R&D efforts. The lab is ISO/IEC 17025 accredited. The Tempe facility's EMI/EMC capabilities are heavily oriented toward military and aerospace standards, primarily RTCA DO-160 and MIL-STD-461. The lab's EMC infrastructure includes military/aerospace semi-anechoic chambers, a reverberation chamber covering 200 MHz to 18 GHz, and extended ground plane test beds. Specific capabilities include radiated susceptibility up to 200 V/m across 10 kHz to 40 GHz, HIRF testing from 100 MHz to 18 GHz at levels up to 7,200 V/m peak, radiated emissions from 30 Hz to 40 GHz, indirect lightning testing (single stroke, multiple stroke, and multiple burst to DO-160 Level 3 and MIL-STD-461 internal equipment levels), electrical power characteristics testing, airborne acoustic noise, shielding effectiveness, transfer impedance, ESD up to 30 kV, HERO (Hazards of Electromagnetic Radiation to Ordnance) testing, and USCAR-28/AK-LV-16 compliance testing for automotive airbag initiators. A distinguishing feature of the Tempe facility is its designation as Element's Center of Excellence for solar radiation testing, with three walk-in chambers providing irradiated areas up to 20 square feet for both heating effects (MIL-STD-810 Procedure I) and actinic/UV degradation effects (Procedure II). Additional environmental simulation capabilities include temperature and humidity cycling, altitude, salt fog, sand and dust, and corrosion testing. The dynamics team provides vibration (random and sine), shock, SRS (shock response spectrum), and acceleration testing. Primary specifications served include MIL-STD-810, MIL-STD-202, RTCA DO-160, ASTM, NEMA, GR-63-CORE, GR-487-CORE, UL 50, ETSI 300-019, and IEC 60068-2.
