Alter Technology TUV NORD - EMC Laboratory
About
Alter Technology, part of the TUV NORD Group, runs its EMC laboratory on Calle de la Majada in Tres Cantos, north of Madrid, and it is the most space-oriented EMC facility in this directory outside the European Space Agency's own sites. It is accredited by ENAC under scope 345/LE808 for EMC testing to UNE-EN ISO/IEC 17025 and is EU Notified Body number 2031 for the EMC Directive and the Radio Equipment Directive, as well as an approved Conformity Assessment Body under European mutual recognition agreements with third countries. Alongside the conventional directive work for CE marking it covers MIL-STD-461, RTCA/DO-160 and the European space standard ECSS-E-ST-20-07C, with multiple chambers allowing parallel testing. The space-specific test list is what sets it apart, and almost none of it exists elsewhere here: inrush current and latch current limiter tests, custom voltage and current spikes, micro-short-circuit and micro-open faults injected on the power bus, slow voltage transients, and bespoke electrostatic discharge pulses. It also performs the ESCC method 24500 Sniff and Spray tests - the European Space Component Coordination procedures where Sniff measures radiated emissions and Spray applies radiated immunity, used to evaluate shielding on flight hardware. For the nuclear energy sector it measures static and slowly varying magnetic fields using two series-connected Helmholtz coils, and it designs, builds and characterises custom line impedance stabilisation networks in the frequency domain when a programme needs a LISN that does not exist off the shelf. Industries served span space and aerospace, defence, aeronautics, Big Science, telecommunications, railway, alarm systems, industrial electronics and nuclear energy. Chamber dimensions, frequency ranges and field strengths are not published. Specialisations are space EMC to ECSS and ESCC, Sniff and Spray shielding evaluation, power bus fault injection, custom LISN design, and Helmholtz coil magnetic field measurement.
