Intertek's Grand Rapids laboratory is a 120,000-square-foot, multi-discipline testing facility located in Kentwood, Michigan. While primarily serving the automotive and aerospace industries, the lab also supports medical, building products, furniture, and consumer electronics manufacturers. The staff includes engineers and scientists with 30+ years of experience across disciplines including engineering, chemistry, and materials science. The facility is one of Intertek's three strategic global locations for automotive EMC testing, alongside Kaufbeuren, Germany and Shanghai, China. Its EMC capabilities include four electromagnetic compatibility test chambers added as part of a major expansion, supporting testing across aerospace, automotive, consumer, medical, and military standards. Specific EMC capabilities include radiated immunity testing up to 200 V/m in accordance with MIL-STD-461 RS103 from 2 MHz to 40 GHz (and down to 10 kHz), radiated immunity to RTCA DO-160 Section 20 up to 200 V/m from 100 MHz to 18 GHz, lightning-induced transient susceptibility to DO-160 Section 22 Level 5, bulk current injection, electrostatic discharge, and radiated emissions testing. The lab features both semi-anechoic and reverberant chambers at 3-meter test distances. Beyond EMC, the Grand Rapids facility offers automotive electrical testing, performance and durability testing, environmental simulation, vibration and mechanical shock, materials and chemistry analysis, battery testing and certification, VOC testing, and product safety evaluation. The lab holds ISO 17025 accreditation, A2LA accreditation, multiple automotive OEM accreditations, and EMC certification. Intertek is also recognized as a technical service under the German car authority (KBA), and utilizes CAN bus data acquisition to monitor component interactions and predict whole-vehicle compliance.
