About

The Electromagnetic Effects Research Laboratory at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore is a university research facility rather than a commercial test house, and its electromagnetic effects work is carried out within the DSO-NTU Joint Laboratory - DSO National Laboratories being Singapore's national defence research and development organisation, which explains the laboratory's stated aim of supporting design methodologies that meet both civilian and military EMC requirements. Its facility set is deliberately complementary rather than duplicative, with four measurement environments chosen to cover different article sizes and different physics. A semi-anechoic chamber handles radiated immunity, radiated emission and shielding effectiveness on large systems. A reverberation chamber covers the same three measurements on large systems by a different method - exciting a mode-stirred cavity to produce statistically uniform high fields without the antenna positioning a conventional chamber requires, which also makes it efficient for shielding effectiveness work. A gigahertz transverse electromagnetic cell handles emission and susceptibility on smaller portable electronics, where a GTEM's tapered geometry gives broadband coverage in a compact footprint. A printed circuit board scanner locates strong emission sources directly on a board for EMC design work, and a dedicated shielding effectiveness measurement system characterises how well a material attenuates electromagnetic energy. Having a semi-anechoic chamber, a reverberation chamber and a GTEM cell alongside board-level scanning means a problem can be traced from system-level failure down to the trace that caused it. The laboratory holds a portfolio of patented work and research publications. No ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation is published, so it is recorded here without an accreditation entry and should be read as a research and development facility rather than a route to a compliance report. Specialisations are reverberation chamber measurement, GTEM cell testing, shielding effectiveness of materials, PCB-level emission source location, and EMC design methodology research for civilian and military electronics.
