About
The Chair of Electromagnetic Compatibility at Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg, headed by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Ralf Vick, sits within the Institute for Medical Technology in the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology in Building 09 on Universitaetsplatz. It is a university research group rather than a commercial accredited test house, and makes its facilities available to industry explicitly so companies can test and investigate new products without buying expensive equipment themselves - with the emphasis not on raw measurement data but on analysis and interpretation by experienced EMC engineers against the valid standards. Research centres on four themes: EMC analysis and modelling of complex systems, covering coupling of electromagnetic fields into systems and cable structures, in-system coupling and coupling into components; EMC measurement, including the application of reverberation chambers, stochastic modelling of devices and the requirements on measurements above 1 GHz; the development of new EMC standards, covering in-situ measurement of large objects, device monitoring during EMC measurements and stochastic modelling and testing of complex systems; and modelling of power-quality phenomena, specifically the voltage-dependent behaviour of non-linear equipment and the interaction of harmonic sources. The laboratory estate is unusually broad for an academic group and includes a semi-anechoic chamber, a mode-stirred reverberation chamber, a GTEM cell, separate laboratories for conducted emissions and conducted immunity, a laboratory for cables, transmission lines and network analysis, a laboratory for numerical field calculation, a laboratory for high-power electromagnetics (HPEM) and a laboratory for power quality. The HPEM and stochastic-reverberation capabilities are the distinguishing features - these are research tools for intentional electromagnetic interference and statistical EMC assessment rather than routine conformity work. Industry engagement runs through testing and consulting contracts, joint research projects, formal cooperations and the annual Magdeburg EMC workshop and EMC Industry Seminars.
