About
UL Solutions' Fremont laboratory on Benicia Street sits in the southern East Bay within reach of most of Silicon Valley's hardware engineering, and it is the broadest of UL's North American radio sites in terms of markets served from one address. It holds recognitions for the FCC, Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada, the Radio Equipment Directive and CE marking, Mexico's NOM scheme, Korea through the Radio Research Agency and the Korea Communications Commission, Japan through VCCI, Vietnam under QCVN and TCVN, Taiwan through both the National Communications Commission and the Bureau of Standards, Metrology and Inspection, and Singapore through the Infocomm Media Development Authority - and it operates as a Telecommunication Certification Body and EU Notified Body, so certificates issue from the same engagement as the measurements. Alongside the electromagnetic compatibility set of emissions, immunity, harmonics and flicker, and radiofrequency and specific absorption rate testing, two capabilities mark it out. The first is protocol and interoperability testing: Bluetooth Qualification, Matter and Thread, which are conformance programmes a product needs in addition to regulatory approval before it can carry those logos, and which most EMC laboratories do not run. The second is chipset and component-level testing, letting a silicon vendor characterise a radio module before it reaches a product design. The site also has a portable dynamometer and does electric vehicle system testing, with multiple chambers and dedicated workspaces, though UL's own page for automotive EMC accreditation in the United States points to its Novi, Michigan site rather than this one. Wireless coverage spans Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Zigbee, NFC and cellular. Note that UL's page spells the street Benica; the correct spelling is Benicia. Specialisations are Bluetooth, Matter and Thread protocol qualification, chipset and component testing, EV systems, and Asian and Pacific market access.
